Elsevier Agreement

Elsevier and TLCUA (Texas Library Coalition for United Action) have established an agreement to support authors who wish to publish open access. 
 The cost of publishing open access is reduced under the terms of this agreement.  Eligible corresponding authors receive a discount on the article publishing charge (APC).

"Read & Publish" Deal

UTMB authors get a discount on the article processing cost (APC) for open access articles in some of the journals published by Elsevier.

  • Corresponding author must UTMB or from another UT System Institution
  • Author must choose the Open Access option and the applicable APC discount on publishing form
  • Author must be manually approved by the library for the discount
    • Authors are encouraged to use UTMB email

Discounts

10% discount on APC for articles published in hybrid journals

15% discount on APC for articles published in all-open journals ("Gold OA")

Publishing Process

The process of publishing under the agreement is straightforward:

  • Step 1 – Once the journal accepts your article, you will receive an email containing a link to the “post acceptance author journey”.
  • Step 2 – You will be asked to review your affiliation and funder details. Based on this information, you will see personalized publishing options including the option to publish under the agreement.
  • Step 3 – You will confirm your publishing choices and complete the post acceptance journey.
  • Step 4 – Your institution will validate your eligibility for the agreement.
  • Step 5 – You and your co-authors will receive an email to confirm that the APC discount will be applied.

Publishing Open Access with Elsevier

Authors that Published Since July 1, 2022

Elsevier will apply discounts retroactively for article processing charges (APCs) for articles published since July 1, 2022, which is the effective start date for the APC discount program per our license agreement with Elsevier.

  • If not yet paid– Elsevier will inform authors that they are retrospectively eligible for the discount, credit the existing invoice, and re-issue the invoice.
  • If paid by credit card– Elsevier will inform the authors that they are retrospectively eligible for the discount, credit the existing invoice, re-issue a new invoice, and refund the discounted amount to the credit card used for paying the initial full price. No further is action is needed from the author.
  •  If paid by bank account transfer– Elsevier will inform authors that they are retrospectively eligible for the discount, credit the existing invoice, and re-issue a new invoice. Elsevier will also request bank account details to refund the discounted amount. However, please note that refunds will only happen once the bank account details are provided.
