NIH Scientific Data Sharing Policy: Budgeting

This guide explains the requirements related to scientific data sharing for NIH-funded research.

NIH Policy on Requesting Funding for Data Sharing

The NIH allows applicants to include reasonable costs for data sharing associated with the following:

  1. Curating data and developing supporting documentation
  2. Local data management considerations
  3. Preserving and sharing data through established repositories

Not supported are infrastructure costs associated with institutional overhead, costs associated with the routine conduct of research, or costs associated with collecting or otherwise gaining access to data.

All costs must be incurred within the performance period of the award, even for data and metadata preserved and shared beyond the award period.
