What is PICO(T)

PICO(T) is a mnemonic used to describe the elements of a good clinical foreground question.

P - Population/Patient/Problem

  • What population are you referring to? 
  • Who is your patient? 
  • What condition/disease are you looking at?

I - Intervention

  • What needs to be done? 
  • What do you want to do for the patient? 
  • Prescribe drug(s)? 
  • Order tests? 
  • Surgery?

C - Comparison

  • What is the alternative compared with the intervention?

O - Outcome

  • What do you want to be accomplished/measured/improved?
  • What are the outcomes?

T - Time

  • Are you look for articles within the last five (5) years?

Types of PICO(T) Questions

Examples

In pregnant women with hypertension, does antihypertensive medication compared to lifestyle modifications alone lower the risk of preterm birth?

P - Pregnant women with hypertension

I - Antihypertensive medication

C - Lifestyle modifications

O - Lower the risk of preterm birth


 

Among hospitalized patients, does hand hygiene compared to standard care reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections?
