Weekly Objectives

Chronic Kidney Disease

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Define chronic kidney disease
  2. Diagram the classification system of chronic kidney disease
  3. Evaluate renal adaptation to nephron loss mediated by hypertrophy and functional changes in the remnant nephrons
  4. Examine the progression of chronic kidney disease with replacement of normal kidney tissue with fibrotic tissue
  5. Investigate the hormonal response in chronic kidney disease in regards to erythropoietin, 1,25 (OH)2 Vitamin D3, and parathyroid hormone
  6. Evaluate chronic kidney disease and establish chronicity through imaging, assessment of GFR, and urinalysis 
  7. Analyze management of CKD with regards to anemia, bone mineral metabolism, and electrolytes disturbances
  8. Evaluate the therapeutic options available for end stage renal disease
  9. Examine the indications to initiate renal replacement therapy
