Chronic Kidney Disease
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Define chronic kidney disease
- Diagram the classification system of chronic kidney disease
- Evaluate renal adaptation to nephron loss mediated by hypertrophy and functional changes in the remnant nephrons
- Examine the progression of chronic kidney disease with replacement of normal kidney tissue with fibrotic tissue
- Investigate the hormonal response in chronic kidney disease in regards to erythropoietin, 1,25 (OH)2 Vitamin D3, and parathyroid hormone
- Evaluate chronic kidney disease and establish chronicity through imaging, assessment of GFR, and urinalysis
- Analyze management of CKD with regards to anemia, bone mineral metabolism, and electrolytes disturbances
- Evaluate the therapeutic options available for end stage renal disease
- Examine the indications to initiate renal replacement therapy
